Many people experience bloating occasionally after a large meal, but some people feel bloated almost every day. If your abdomen feels tight, distended, or uncomfortable after eating, it can be frustrating and confusing to understand why it keeps happening.

In my naturopathic practice in Toronto, bloating is one of the most common digestive symptoms I see. Many patients come to see me after months or even years of dealing with bloating, gas, and digestive discomfort without clear answers.

Occasional bloating can be normal, but persistent bloating often has an underlying cause.

WHAT DOES BLOATING FEEL LIKE?

People describe bloating in different ways. Common symptoms include:

  • a feeling of fullness or pressure in the abdomen
  • visible abdominal distension
  • excessive gas or burping
  • discomfort after eating
  • tightness in the stomach area

Some people feel bloated only after certain foods, while others experience symptoms after nearly every meal.

COMMON CAUSES OF CHRONIC BLOATING

Persistent bloating is often related to how food is digested and how bacteria in the digestive tract interact with it. Learn more about chronic bloating treatment.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)

One common cause of chronic bloating is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). This occurs when bacteria that normally live in the large intestine begin growing in the small intestine.

These bacteria ferment carbohydrates in food and produce gas, which can lead to bloating, abdominal discomfort, and changes in bowel habits.

Many people with SIBO are initially diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Food Sensitivities

Certain foods can trigger bloating in sensitive individuals. Foods high in fermentable carbohydrates, sometimes referred to as FODMAPs, may cause gas production when they are broken down by gut bacteria.

Common triggers may include:

  • onions and garlic
  • certain fruits
  • wheat products
  • beans and legumes
  • dairy in people with lactose intolerance

Identifying food sensitivities may help reduce symptoms for some people.

Digestive Enzyme Insufficiency

Some individuals do not produce enough digestive enzymes to properly break down food. When food is not fully digested, it may ferment in the gut and cause bloating and gas.

Imbalances in the Gut Microbiome

The digestive tract contains trillions of bacteria that play an important role in digestion and overall health. When the balance of these microbes changes, digestive symptoms such as bloating may occur.

SYMPTOMS THAT MAY SUGGEST SIBO

Some symptoms that may suggest small intestinal bacterial overgrowth include:

  • bloating that worsens after meals
  • excessive gas or belching
  • abdominal distension later in the day
  • alternating constipation and diarrhea
  • sensitivity to carbohydrate‑rich foods

WHAT MANY PATIENTS NOTICE

In my Toronto naturopathic practice, patients often describe similar patterns with their bloating. Many notice that symptoms:

  • worsen after eating carbohydrates
  • become more noticeable later in the day
  • improve when certain foods are removed
  • began after antibiotics or illness

HOW A TORONTO NATUROPATH CAN HELP

Working with a naturopath in Toronto can help identify what's driving persistent bloating.

During an initial digestive health consultation, I review:

  • digestive symptoms and patterns
  • diet and lifestyle factors
  • medical history
  • possible triggers for bloating

In some cases, additional testing may be helpful. This may include SIBO breath testing or other digestive assessments depending on the symptoms involved.

Treatment plans are individualized and may include nutritional strategies, digestive support, and targeted therapies aimed at improving gut function.

WHEN IT MAY BE TIME TO SEEK HELP FOR BLOATING

Occasional bloating after a large meal is common. However, if bloating happens frequently or has been ongoing for months or years, it may be helpful to look more closely at the underlying cause.

In my Toronto naturopathic practice, many patients come to see me after trying dietary changes on their own without lasting improvement.

If you regularly experience abdominal distension, discomfort after eating, or ongoing digestive symptoms, a personalized assessment may help identify possible contributing factors.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can a naturopath help with bloating?

A naturopathic assessment may help identify contributing factors such as SIBO, digestive enzyme insufficiency, food sensitivities, or microbiome imbalance.

Is bloating always related to diet?

Not always. While certain foods can trigger symptoms, persistent bloating may also involve bacterial imbalance or impaired digestion.

Do you test for SIBO in Toronto?

SIBO breath testing may be recommended in certain cases when symptoms suggest bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.
