A multicenter, single-blinded, randomized controlled clinical trial found that acupuncture relieved pain and reduced the usage of acute medication for 150 patients experiencing migraine attacks from March 2007 to February 2009. The treatment group received acupuncture while the control group received sham acupuncture when having a migraine attack. In both groups, medications were allowed if the pain failed to be relieved two hours after the acupuncture. The treatment group experienced more relief as measured by visual analog scale (VAS) scores for pain. The results suggest that treatment with acupuncture may be an effective tool for pain management and medication reduction.
