A 2 month double-blind, randomized, parallel, placebo-controlled study involving 37 patients, aged 7-19 years, found that oral magnesium supplementation helped to reduce bronchial reactivity, diminish allergen-induced skin responses and provide better symptom control in pediatric patients with moderate persistent asthma. The magnesium group experienced fewer asthma exacerbations and used less salbutamol to control their asthma than the placebo group. Results suggest oral magnesium supplementation reduced reactivity to methacholine, diminished allergic responses and provided better symptom control in pediatric patients with moderate persistent asthma and treated with inhaled fluticasone.
