Why Fish Oil? A Naturopathic Perspective.

Fish oil is one of the most common supplements prescribed by Naturopaths, but why is that the case? In this article we will look at what fish oil can do for us and see why it is such an important supplement.

Fish oil is rich in two omega 3 fatty acids called EPA and DHA.  EPA and DHA essential nutrients that cannot be produced by the body and therefore, need to be consumed regularly.  EPA and DHA can be supplemented at therapeutic levels to improve health outcomes.  Effective treatment requires taking the right therapeutic dosage for each of these fatty acids because if the dose is too low, health benefits may not be seen.  In addition to taking the right therapeutic dose, it is also important to take a fish oil from a reputable company that produces a clean, high quality oil.  Not all fish oils are created equal.  This is where consulting with your Naturopath is helpful.

Fish Oil is effective in treating a wide variety of health concerns.  Most commonly it is used for skin concerns, inflammatory conditions and cardiovascular issues.  There is also research supporting the use of fish oil for depression and fetal neuronal development.  Here is a more specific summary of the benefits:

  • Fish oil has been shown to significantly improve psoriasis, eczema and chronic dry skin. Adequate intake is required to see effects.
  • EPA in fish oil is the direct precursor for prostaglandins, which are involved in helping the body normalize inflammation. As a result, it is useful in wide variety of inflammatory conditions including rheumatoid arthritis and asthma.
  • Fish oil lowers heart disease risk by reducing triglycerides, inflammation, platelet aggregation, irregular heart beating and by improving arterial wall tone.
  • Several studies have found an inverse correlation between oily fish consumption and depression.
  • DHA is vital for the structural integrity of neuron membranes and it is essential for neurological and visual development throughout pregnancy to support fetal brain growth and the formation of the retina and visual cortex.
