Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a complex disorder of the digestive system that may have many different root causes, making it difficult to diagnose and treat. A majority of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) patients also suffer from SIBO. More than 80% of people who are told they have IBS actually have SIBO. This can then be treated and often resolve IBS symptoms. As experts in the field, we at NDcare want to introduce you to our SIBO lab testing for IBS.

A SIBO lab test aims to assess for bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine that can cause IBS symptoms (gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, etc.) This test can benefit anyone who has been told they have IBS or anyone with gas, bloating, or bowel movement changes. Many people are told they have IBS, which is a diagnosis of exclusion. They are told they have this when conventional testing is all negative.

The SIBO test is a unique and effective test for those with IBS. Once diagnosed, there is an effective treatment to reduce SI bacteria levels and alleviate IBS symptoms. This test is a non-invasive breath test to assess hydrogen or methane gas levels, indicating the presence of bacteria. The kit is purchased at the clinic, then the samples are provided at home and then sent to the lab for testing.

Typically, you begin a breath test by drinking a solution of water and lactulose (sometimes glucose). Bacteria in your small intestine love lactulose and will produce lots of gasses when they eat it, while humans are unable to digest it. This test can be done by a naturopathic doctor or naturopathic clinic like NDcare naturopathic clinic.
